How Museum-Quality Framing Protects Art
Conservation-minded framing separates the artwork from harmful materials and physical contact. The appropriate specification may include acid-free mounts, reversible methods and protective glazing, but should match the work.
Specify the frame around the medium
A frame specification should explain how the work is supported, what materials touch it, and how it is protected. Paper works often need separation from glazing and appropriate mounting materials. Canvas and textured surfaces have different requirements. Ask the framer to describe the proposed method for the exact artwork, including whether mounting is reversible.
Confirm glazing and finished dimensions
Anti-reflective treatment and UV filtering describe different properties; ask which are included in the proposed glass or acrylic. Large formats also need decisions about weight, handling and installation. Approve a frame profile and finish together with the outer dimensions, then check that the finished piece fits both the wall and the delivery route.
