Provenance Explained
Provenance is the documented ownership and transaction history of a work. Its depth varies, especially for new work, but invoices, gallery records and exhibition documentation can create a clear chain.
Understand the record that exists
A recently produced work offered through an artist’s gallery may have a short ownership history. An older work may have several transfers. Ask which links in that history are documented and which are based on statements. Exhibition and publication references can help identify a work, but they are different from evidence of ownership.
Preserve the artist’s identifying details
Keep titles, series names, dates and edition markings consistent across your records. Renaming a work for a room or marketing image can make later research harder. Retain the original purchase documents and note subsequent conservation or framing work. Where records are incomplete, describe the gap accurately instead of filling it with assumptions.
