How to Care for Contemporary Paintings
Keep paintings away from unstable heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Handle the frame rather than the painted surface and consult a conservator if cracking, lifting, mould or impact damage appears.
Treat the surface as artwork
Contemporary paintings may combine acrylic, oil, collage or other materials with very different properties. Do not assume that a glossy or apparently robust surface can be wiped clean. Ask for the artist’s or conservator’s care guidance. Keep the work away from direct sun, radiators, damp and places where people or furniture might brush against it.
Plan safe handling and condition records
Before moving a painting, note existing marks and photograph the front, edges and reverse when safely accessible. Use enough people for its size and weight, and avoid pressure on the canvas or painted surface. If paint lifts, the support distorts or damage appears, stop handling it and seek professional conservation advice.
