What Is a Limited Edition?
A limited edition is a defined number of authorised impressions of an artwork. The edition size, numbering, signature, production method and any artist proofs should be documented for the specific work.
Read the edition alongside the size
The fraction 3/10 usually identifies impression three within a numbered edition of ten. It does not, on its own, explain whether other sizes, colourways or artist proofs exist. Ask how the artist defines the edition and whether the available dimensions belong to separate editions.
Distinguish an edition from a reproduction
Find out whether the image was conceived as an editioned artwork, or reproduces a separate original painting or drawing. Neither the word “limited” nor a signature tells you the full production history. Your written record should identify the image, medium, size, edition structure and the specific impression being supplied.
