How to Care for Fine-Art Photography
Limit direct sunlight, heat, humidity swings and contact with the print surface. Use the verified framing specification and seek professional advice before cleaning, reframing or moving a large work.
Choose a suitable display position
Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, damp walls and locations with large changes in temperature or humidity. Protective glazing does not make a print immune to light or environmental damage. Ask for guidance suited to the actual print, substrate and mounting method, particularly when considering a kitchen, bathroom or bright conservatory.
Handle the frame, protect the print
Keep fingers and cleaning products away from the print surface. When cleaning glazing, follow the framer’s instructions and avoid liquid reaching the edges. Do not remove an unfamiliar mount or attempt to flatten a damaged print yourself. Photograph changes such as rippling or spotting and ask a qualified conservator or the gallery for advice.
